34 â While You Were Sleeping
âWake up, Aleza,â her father said.
She opened her eyes slowly. âFather?â
It took a moment to adjust to the light. She was in Marjorieâs guest bedroom. The thin silk curtains were partly drawn.
âNo. Itâs Oliver. Are you all right?â Oliver looked into her eyes.
Her arms were not yet working. âI still canât move my limbs. Am I dying?â
âMarjorie said you might be out of order for a few days.â
âIâm positively useless, then.â Aleza sighed.
âWe can handle the rest. Stay and get some sleep. I donât want you risking yourself like that again.â
âThatâs up to me to decide.â
âTrue, but Iâd rather you not put yourself in danger because of us, or me.â
âAsha tells me thatâs my job. To make sure you guys donât mess up and get yourselves killed.â She smiled.
âThe good news is that weâre almost at our destination. We should be able to make it there without any issues. Malchior is severely injured, and he has no reinforcements.â
âYouâre right. It should be alright. If you die out there and donât come see me again, Iâll be mad.â
âDonât worry, Iâll come back after this is done. Plus, your tune helped me figure out how to work my healing magic a little better, so I should be able to heal possible injuries.â
Aleza remembered why she had passed out, and the little girl that she had sent Oliver to find.
âOliver, did you help the little girlâs mother? Did it work?â
Oliver placed his hand on hers and began to recount the story.

Marjorie had been getting ready to head over to her store when she heard Alezaâs request. She found Oliver giving Jasper a honey-covered biscuit in his room.
âOliver, I need you. We have the chance to save an injured woman.â
He nodded, touching Jasper on the shoulder. âIâll be back.â
Jasper gave him a thumbs up.
Marjorie and Oliver headed into the streets. âArlette said the woman is at the intersection by The Curious Hog. We donât have much time to waste.â
Oliver kept up with her. âWhat happened, if I may ask?â
âShe was attacked by a certain giant crab while it was on its rampage. There is a child waiting inside a home there, according to Arlette.â
Oliver felt a sinking feeling in his stomach. He had been responsible for knowing the whereabouts of the crab but forgot in the heat of the moment. It was now running through the city due to his negligence. If he had checked on the crab last night, this would not have happened. However, he couldnât have been in two places at once. Jasper needed healing, and he figured Aleza would have handled the crab before she reached them. Assumptions usually led to complications and Oliver should have known that by now.
âIt was my fault. I didnât remember to check on it while it was still locked down by Alezaâs spell,â Oliver said, lowering his gaze.
âItâs not anyoneâs fault. Your friend was in dire need of your assistance. Anyone would have forgotten in that situation,â Marjorie said.
